There's Gotta Be a Better Way: Training Teams in Neurodiversity Affirming Practices

“I don’t want anyone else in your practice. I need YOU right now, Jessie. I really need you.”

It was the mom of a long time client on the phone. Life had gotten busy and I had passed all of my own clients to other therapists because I was one ball away from dropping them all.

But the desperation in this mom’s voice was a pull to my heartstrings and I could feel the boundaries I’d drawn in the sand start to wash away.

I offered to consult with her team. I began going to all of her appointments: Speech, ABA, school, swimming, social group, the list goes on.

After two weeks my brain was fried because I was giving the same spiels to every single person on her team.

And when I’d finally gotten everyone on the same page with the foundations of a neurodiversity affirming approach, several therapists left their jobs or had scheduling changes, and new ones took their places. Back to square one.

I started recording a training library for her team. It was a major time saver because I could record a 5 minute video and shoot it out to 20 professionals at once and get everyone on the same page.

The problem was that those videos were very specific to her and couldn’t be used for any of our other clients in the clinic. But what if I had videos that could be used for every kid?
