Embracing Neurodiversity-Affirming Practices: A Conversation with Daj
Neurodiversity-affirming practices are transforming how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) approach therapy, fostering inclusivity, understanding, and respect for neurodivergent individuals.
Recently, Celina Wright from the NeuroAffirm Academy team had the pleasure of chatting with Daj, an exceptional SLP and founding member of the NeuroAffirm Academy whose work spans schools, private practice, and even web design.
Our conversation shed light on the power and versatility of neurodiversity-affirming approaches across diverse settings.
A Game-Changing Resource for SLPs
When Daj first encountered the NeuroAffirm Academy, her reaction was one of excitement and relief. “When I saw the launch of NeuroAffirm, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, this sounds amazing!’” she shared. The Academy stood out as a centralized resource for SLPs eager to integrate neurodiversity-affirming practices into their work. From real-life examples to specialized topics like AAC and IEP meetings, the Academy has provided Daj with tools and knowledge to navigate complex professional challenges.
She emphasized how this resource isn’t just theoretical: “It’s real-life. It breaks things into specific topics, so you see how neurodiversity-affirming practices apply across different facets of our work.”
Applying Neurodiversity-Affirming Practices Across Settings
Daj’s work is a testament to how these practices can permeate all areas of an SLP’s professional life. Primarily a school-based SLP, Daj uses neurodiversity-affirming principles to influence her school’s culture, advocating for a strengths-based, whole-child approach. Her work extends to private practice, where she collaborates with families, focusing on parent coaching and early intervention.
Surprisingly, Daj also applies neurodiversity-affirming practices in her side business of web design. Many of her clients are neurodiversity-affirming therapists themselves, and Daj ensures their values shine through in their online presence. “They don’t want jargon; they want their story to connect with families,” she explained, showing how values like authenticity and accessibility are essential across professions.
A Journey of Learning and Advocacy
Daj’s journey into neurodiversity-affirming work didn’t start in graduate school. “We weren’t taught this language or framework,” she noted, explaining how her understanding grew through personal research and discovering thought leaders like Jessie Ginsburg and Chris Wenger. Initially, navigating the vast sea of information was overwhelming. But finding the Academy provided clarity and confidence, giving her tools to advocate for her clients and educate her colleagues.
One resource Daj highlighted was Chris Wenger’s DASEL framework, which she uses with middle and high school students to foster collaboration and align teams on a strengths-based path. “By the time I reach an IEP meeting, everyone’s already on the same page. We’re looking at the whole child, not just deficits.”
The Ripple Effect of Affirming Practices
For Daj, the power of neurodiversity-affirming practices lies in their ripple effect. By starting assessments and conversations with affirming language, she sets a tone that influences how teams, families, and clients engage with therapy. “Everything trickles down when you take a strengths-based approach from the beginning,” she said.
Her story serves as a reminder of the profound impact SLPs can have when they embrace neurodiversity-affirming practices. Whether it’s shaping school culture, empowering families, or designing a website, these approaches foster respect, collaboration, and meaningful progress.
A Final Takeaway
When asked about the most valuable lesson she’s learned recently, Daj reflected on the importance of community. “The diversity of experiences in the Academy has been eye-opening. Learning from others helps me discern resources and refine my approach.”
Her insights highlight the value of shared knowledge and collaboration in this evolving field. As Daj continues to advocate for neurodivergent individuals, her work exemplifies the transformative power of affirming practices—building bridges of understanding and paving the way for a more inclusive future.
